A couple of days ago I saw the somewhat underrated film “The Gift.” And it is such a pleasure to see Reeves play “the bad guy”… I think this guy should be casted as pure evil more often. He truly has a gift for it. The whole hero thing is kind of old anyway… Anyway, Keanu is up to some new exciting stuff. The Hollywood Reporter tells us that Keanu Reeves has been locked up as the male lead in “Passengers.” His female love interest is still being sought for what the producers short-handed as “Adam & Eve in Space.” The pic also will have a couple of comedic roles and set designs created by some of the wizards who worked on “Avatar.”

Set in the future, “Passengers” centers on Jim Preston (Reeves), a mechanic on a 120-year journey to a distant colonized planet in another galaxy, who becomes the first traveler to experience pod hibernation failure. Having woken up 100 years too soon, he is stranded in the world of an interstellar spaceship with only robots and androids for companionship.

A year into his journey, he decides to wake up a fellow passenger, a beautiful journalist named Aurora. They fall in love but must soon deal not only with the revelation of Jim’s misjudged act of waking her but a major malfunction of the ship itself.

Well doesn’t that sound intriguing? Bring it on!

Dark Horizons reports that pre-production on David Fincher’s upcoming adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s international mega-hit novel “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” is in full swing with the director currently in Stockholm going over locations.

Fincher wants a “European look” for the film and is planning to shoot all the exteriors in Sweden. Due to tax incentives though, studio work will be done in other countries.

Surprisingly Fincher also wants to keep Swedish locations intact instead of shifting the action to the U.S. like so many remakes. The move will draw further comparisons with the already released and acclaimed Swedish-language film trilogy which shot in several of the locations mentioned in Larsson’s novels.

The Swedish shoot also brings up the question of language – will all the characters talk in English or only some, and will Lisbeth Salander or Mikael Blomqvist be changed into being British or American characters (the casting has yet to be locked down)?

Shooting will kick off in October.

I was just over at Dark Horizons and they had a little interview with scribe Kevin Williamson about the upcoming Scream trilogy. To begin with Williamson totally dismisses the rumors that actor Jamie Kennedy would reprise his role of Randy in the upcoming fourth film.

Williamson, says that “We’re not that movie. We’re not that universe where you can bring people back from the dead. That would be just a cheat. It’s such a disservice. Everyone’s like, ‘When’s Randy coming back?’ I’m like, You know what? I would love nothing more than to have Jamie Kennedy in the film. However to have Randy in the film, it sort of just takes it… I mean ‘Scream 2‘ was a lie, you know? It’s a false move. So I just won’t do it. I can’t do that. I just won’t do it.”

Williamson also confirmed that this upcoming film is indeed the first in a potential trilogy: “There’s three. I am contracted for 4, 5 and 6, but the deal for 6 is not done. I mean I pitched three films. The story is about returning to Woodsboro“.

So what would the next ones be about? “5 will be a continuation of 4, but 4 is its own movie. It has a beginning, a middle and its own ending, which will be satisfying hopefully. It has a beginning, middle and end and 5 has a beginning, middle and end; it’s just a continuation of the lives of all the people that live in 4. I can’t start giving 5 away – that gives up too much of 4” says Williamson.

The lensing of “Scream 4” is set to begin this summer and it’s scheduled for release April 15th 2011.

Ghostface: Name the killer in Friday the 13th.
Casey: Jason! Jason, Jason!
Ghostface: I’m sorry. That’s the wrong answer!
Casey: No, it’s not. No it’s not. It was Jason.
Ghostface: Afraid not. No way.
Casey: Listen, it was Jason! I saw that movie 20 goddamn times!
Ghostface: Then you should know that Mrs. Voorhees was the original killer. Jason didn’t show up until the sequel.
Casey: [Weeping] You tricked me…
Ghostface: Lucky for you there’s a bonus round, but poor Steve… I’m afraid he’s OUT!

The Hollywood Reporter posts that young actor Zac Efron is attached to star in and produce a remake of “Snabba cash,” the hot Swedish property that was the subject of a heavy Hollywood bidding war and has just found a home at Warner Bros.

“Snabba cash” is based on a novel by author Jens Lapidus and was a major hit in its home country this year. The thriller follows three interconnected storylines involving drugs and organized crime, with the main character a young man (played in the original by Joel Kinnaman) who hopes to strike it rich quickly by becoming a runner for a coke dealer. Efron would play the runner in the WB version.

Many producers and companies were vying for remake rights. The buzz began at the Berlin Film Festival, and UTA and Magnolia Entertainment threw a reception for the movie’s filmmaker Daniel Espinosa at the Hammer Museum in March and screened his movie. From then, offers started to pour in like easy money (which is what “snabba cash” means in Swedish) from Universal, Summit, Paramount, Fox, the Weinstein Co., Mandate and Warners.

This is a great opportunity for Efron to grow beyond the teen roles that made him a star. The project, the first acquisition for Efron’s shingle, also sends a signal as to the sort of high-level material with which Efron wants to be associated.

Sad, sad news… Variety reports that actor Corey Haim, a 1980s teen heartthrob whose career was blighted by drug abuse, died early Wednesday in Burbank. He was 38. It’s just weird, he was one of the coolest young actors of the 80′s… He was one those guys you imagine “had it all,” and would continue to live a charmed life. Apparently it didn’t work out that way…

Born in Toronto in 1971, Haim got his start in television commercials at age 10. He made his feature debut in 1984′s “Firstborn,” and his profile grew with such pics as 1985′s “Silver Bullet.” Corey’s career peaked with his roles in 1986′s “Lucas” and the Joel Schumacher-helmed hit “The Lost Boys” in 1987, in which he battled vampires. He also appeared in 2008 sequel “Lost Boys: The Tribe.”

Haim acknowledged his struggle with drug abuse to a British tabloid in 2004. “I was working on ‘Lost Boys’ when I smoked my first joint,” he told the Sun. “I did cocaine for about a year and a half, then it led to crack.” He sought to mount a comeback as a thesp, going so far as to run an ad in Daily Variety in February 2008 that stated: “This is not a stunt. I’m back. I’m ready to work. I’m ready to make amends.”

“As he got out of bed, he felt a little weak and went down to the floor on his knees,” assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said. An autopsy will determine Haim’s cause of death. “There was no evidence of foul play“, police Sgt. Michael Kammert said. “Haim had flu-like symptoms before he died and was getting over-the-counter and prescription medications“, police Sgt. William Mann said.

R.I.P. Corey. You will be missed.

There has been talk about this since… Well, it’s been a long time. Most people around the globe have sweet memories from the golden days of “Police Academy.” It was a seven-film comedy series that saw a city throw open the doors of its police force to any recruit, much to the chagrin of its serious officers. The misfit officers band together and, of course, save the city.

The first two, maybe three films were OK, but after that it just went south. Very south… Most of the actors (except for maybe Sharon Stone and Kim Cattrall) never really made an impact after “Police Academy.” They will forever be associated with the series. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, New Line is looking for recruits for a relaunched “Police Academy” movie. Original producer Paul Maslansky is back for the new iteration, which has no writer or director attached.

The first film, released in 1984, starred Steve Guttenberg as Mahoney, a repeat offender who is forced to enter the academy and emerges as the group’s leader. Other notable characters included Moses Hightower (Bubba Smith), gun-crazy Tackleberry (David Graf), mousy Hooks (Marion Ramsey) and sound effects-spewing Larvell Jones (Michael Winslow).

Bobcat Goldthwait joined the cast for the second movie in 1985. The series, which included Kim Cattrall and Sharon Stone as romantic leads, ended with the 1994′s “Mission to Moscow.” All told, the franchise took in about $240 million worldwide and inspired a pair of TV series.

“It’s going to be very worthwhile to the people who remember it and to those who saw it on TV,” Maslansky said. “It’s going to be a new class. We hope to discover new talent and season it with great comedians. It’ll be anything but another movie with a numeral next to it. And we’ll most probably retain the wonderful musical theme.”

The early entries in the series featured sexual humor, but later films became more kid-friendly. Details of the tone of new movie, which would take the story to its beginnings with new characters, were unavailable.

So, another Oscar night and a whole bunch of new winners. The 82nd Annual Academy Awards have have just wrapped and without a doubt the big winner was “The Hurt Locker” (the film scooped six awards!). Personally I’m very pleased about Christoph Waltz getting a statue for his fantastic performance in “Inglourious Basterds.”

There were actually very few surprises with most categories won by the favorites. No thrills at all. That lack of surprise continued over into Best Actor and Actress, with “Crazy Heart’s” Jeff Bridges and “The Blind Side’s” Sandra Bullock both taking home a golden statue.

The broadcast has some “technical problems” with really bad choice of clips and audio dropouts. The whole show, unfortunately, lacked much of the polish of last year’s Academy Awards.

Anyway, here’s the list:

I was just over at The Hollywood Reporter and apparently Universal and Robert De Niro are getting ready for another run. The studio is developing a sequel to “Midnight Run,” the 1988 action comedy that starred De Niro as a bounty hunter who must bring back an embezzler, played by Charles Grodin, across the country. Timothy Dowling is being brought on board to pen the script that would bring back De Niro’s character, Jack Walsh, and pair him with a younger comedic foil.

“Run,” while not a huge hit, was well-recieved by critics, even as it pushed the f-word count to new heights. The movie is also a touchstone for execs on road movies as well as thriller-comedies. Although several made-for-TV movies were made as sequels, without the original stars, De Niro began to seriously consider a sequel during his recent “Little Fockers” shoot.

Judging by this little post, Charles Grodin is not being considered for the sequel. Maybe he will make little cameo or something, just to wrap things up properly. “Midnight Run’s” success should be credit to both De Niro and Grodin. Then again, I haven’t seen Grodin in anthing for like the last 10 years or so… Is he still working?

De Niro will produce with Tribeca Films partner Jane Rosenthal.

MTV Movies Blog recently spoke with actor Liev Schreiber about his next project, and the news might surprise you… “There’s a guy named Chuck Wepner, ‘The Bayonne Bleeder.’ He’s the guy that ‘Rocky‘ was based on,” Schreiber said. “He went 15 rounds with Muhammad Ali in 1974 and it’s this wonderful story of what happened to that guy as a result of his rise to fame.”

“The Bayonne Bleeder” is a former heavyweight boxer from New Jersey. He won 35 out of 51 fights during his career, 17 of which were knockouts. He faced George Foreman, Sonny Liston and Muhammad Ali during his years in the ring and he’s also been named as Sylvester Stallone’s inspiration for fictional boxer Rocky Balboa.

Wepner challenged Ali for the Heavyweight title in 1975. He spent eight weeks training to prepare for the March 24 fight, which took place in Cleveland. He ultimately lost to the champ of course, but he managed to send Ali to the mat in the ninth round before receiving a broken nose and more than a few facial lacerations. When asked beforehand if he thought he could make it through the fight alive, Wepner reportedly said, “I’ve been a survivor my whole life… if I survived the Marines, I can survive Ali.”

Schreiber didn’t talk timetables or casting or anything like that, but he did name director Jeff Feuerzeig as the man who will helm it. “That’s the next thing I’d like to do,” the actor said. “It’s just a remarkable, hilarious film and I hope we get to make it.” Since Schreiber is a fine actor the whole thing sound very promising. Altough, since the story already has so strong connections to Stallone’s “Rocky”, there’s a chance it will feel more like a remake of “Rocky” then a biopic of Chuck Wepner. Time will tell…

Filmmaker Kevin Smith had a little chat with NHL.com and revealed that Seann William Scott, who worked with Smith on “Cop Out,” will play Buddy, the title character in “Hit Somebody.” It’s a story of a hockey enforcer who strives to score just one goal in a hockey game.

“Seann, for me, was the key into the character,” Smith told NHL.com. “I had all the elements in place, and the one thing I was missing was the personality. Generally I like to write to a voice, but I didn’t know who that voice was or what that voice could be. And then after spending all the time with Seann on this movie, he’s pitch perfect. He is that guy. Seann Scott is such an ebullient, happy person who’s just happy to be there. And on ‘Cop Out’ you could see it. On our set the guy is just so delighted to be working, to be making people laugh. But he’s always dismissed as Stifler. … This is his chance to shine.”

“When I pegged Seann, I said ‘You’re Minnesota; that might as well be Canada,” said Smith. “You’re from hockey country. He was like, I’m an athlete and I played a lot of baseball and basketball, but I wasn’t good at hockey. I can skate, though. I said that’s all I need. He doesn’t have to be Paul Coffey on skates. He shouldn’t be.”

While nothing is locked in contractually, Smith said having Scott’s voice in his head makes finishing the script a far easier task. “I look at this as Seann’s opportunity to go to the Tom Hanks level,” Smith said. “Hanks for years and years did this lesser role and then he became that blockbuster movie guy. This is Seann’s chance to do that as well, not just be Stifler. And it’s my chance to not just be the ‘Clerks‘ guy. It’s my chance to do something big, epic in scale. Stories I tell span one day. … This spans 30 years. You’re talking a period. You’re trying to bring people to a time in your life that hasn’t existed in 30 years. The look of it, the feel of it, the sound of it — everything I have is going to be in that movie.”
