Guess what? Dark Horizons reports that Doug Ross is finally finding some use for his old rusty scalpel. It turns out that the former TV doctor is now set to star as an assassin in the suspense thriller “The American” for Focus Features, from a script adapted by Rowan Joffe. Clooney is also attached as one of the producers of the project.

In an adaptation of Martin Booth’s 2005 novel “A Very Private Gentleman”, George Clooney plays Jack, an American killer who vows to retire after a previous job in Sweden (What!? He was here?!) goes bad. Holing up in a small Italian country town, he befriends a local priest and pursues a romance with a local woman while waiting for his final assignment to be ready.

Bruce Altman, Thekla Reuten, Paolo Bonacelli and Violante Placido also star. Anton Corbijn is helming the film which began filming on location in Italy this week.
