Tom Hanks to star as Major Matt Mason

I haven’t heard much about the brilliant Tom Hanks and what he’s up to in La La Land. But today I can satisfy the curiousness – yours and mine. Variety reports that Universal will develop “Major Matt Mason,” a live-action feature based on the vintage Mattel action figure. The film will supposedly be developed as a star vehicle for not other then Tom Hanks.

“Major Matt Mason”? Yeah, I know… Never heard of him. Apparantly the toy line originated in 1966; Mason led an astronaut team that worked on the moon and lived in a space station. The toy was a hit in the buildup to the first manned moon mission. Mattel retired the line in the 1970s.

When Mattel execs Tim Kilpin and Barry Waldo came to talk with Hanks about the project, they brought an arsenal of the Matt Mason figures. Hanks came armed with his own. Isn’t that cute. Grown men playing with dolls. Er, sorry – action figures…
